SPMS Open Water Series Rules

If you have any questions about Open Water or the information on this page, please email the SPMS Open Water Chair at openwater@SPMasterSwim.org

Rules
  • A swimmer must be registered with SPMS prior to the start of the swim to score any points for that swim.
  • The use of fins, pull buoys, or other swimming devices will result in instant disqualification.  Soft hand paddles may only be used as a prosthesis provided they do not present a safety hazard to other swimmers.  The Race Director makes the ultimate decision on this.
  • Wetsuits are mandatory in the wetsuit division.  Use of wetsuits shall result in that swimmer being ineligible for SPMS open water place points, as SPMS follows USMS guidelines in the non-use of wetsuits in sanctioned competitions.
  • New rulings on the use of tech suits in open water are forthcoming.  Prior to the start of the 2011 season, USMS/SPMS use of tech suits in open water rules will be posted on this site.
  • It is possible to place fourth in an event, but score first place points – e.g. the three people finishing ahead of you are not SPMS registered.
  • If you age up to a new age group during the season, your points go with you.
  • There are typos on all results.  If you feel there is an error, go to the race link.  Double check your results and email us the details.  We will do our best to correct any errors.
  • The sanctioned races are listed below.  Only these races count toward points.
  • If a race becomes sanctioned after the first official race of the season, that newly sanctioned race will not count toward the points total.  This allows swimmers to plan their summer swim schedule at the beginning of the season.

Age Group Awards

To qualify for an award, a swimmer must swim at least three sanctioned races.  The top five races of each swimmer will be tallied.  The top three point winners in each age group (if they have participated in no less than three swims) will receive an award.

High Point Awards

A high point award will be give to the top male swimmer and the top female swimmer overall.  The top five races of each swimmer will be tallied to reach high point.  In case of a tie, additional races will be added until the tie is broken.  If both swimmers have won every race in their respective age groups (they have swum every race offered), a tie will be declared.

Points

First 22; Second 18; Third 16; Fourth 14; Fifth 12; Sixth 10; Seventh 8; Eight 6; Ninth 4; Tenth 2
A placing higher than tenth will be credited as a swim, but no points will be awarded.

Tabulation of Points

To earn points, a swimmer must be USMS registered to SPMS and have participated in three or more SPMS sanctioned races.  Please enter the race with the name you have on your USMS/SPMS registration, so that we can confirm your SPMS registration.

Everyone is listed that has an SPMS sanctioned open water swim.  SPMS membership is confirmed – every swimmer is checked individually against the registrar’s official list.  Non-SPMS swimmers are removed from the rankings.  Placing is reassigned according to SPMS swimmers only.  Points are assigned to SPMS place.  Those with less than three races are eliminated.  Points are totaled for the five highest placings of each swimmer.  In case of a tie, additional races are totaled.
